My name is Sushanth Manakhari. I live in Erie, PA. My interest in the information technology realm sparked during my undergraduate course. I enrolled in a Data Mining and Application course at my undergrad university in 2007. The purpose of joining this course was to acquire a holistic understanding of data science, including identifying, analyzing, and solving analytics problems. These tools allow for better business intelligence and decision support. This course was an eye-opener for me. It taught me the power of exploring data analysis and statistical modeling. I then moved forward in my formal education and completed my Master of Science in Computer Science at Texas A&M University in 2016.
Recently I read the book StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath and took up the strength finder test. I was surprised to see the top 5 strengths are Futuristic, Ideation, Developer, Learner, and Strategic. The book says for futuristic, People exceptionally talented in the Futuristic theme are inspired by the future and what could be. They energize others with their visions of the future. This statement was so relevant to this coursework. I am very excited to indulge in this and see how I can utilize it towards my dissertation and research ideas. The ideation strength was on par with futuristic strength. The ideation works if we have creative and futuristic thinking.
I have served 11 as a Senior Software Engineer, Data Analyst, Technology Lead, and Subject Matter Expert in Finance and Insurance verticals within my career. After my graduation, I began working for a fortune 500 insurance company. They boast over 5,000 employees and over 5 million active policies in force with diverse business lines such as commercial, life, personal, and auto insurance. Within my career, I have obtained ample hands-on experience in R, Tableau, SQL, Java, JavaScript, Informatica, UNIX, and Mainframe languages (PL/I, COBOL, JCL). I also have experience in ground floor data modeling for insurance applications.
With my experience working for Finance and Insurance clients, I have acquired an excellent grasp of insurance business data and its applications. This data typically consists of information about an individual, their medical history, household structure, driving history, the geography of the insured holdings, vehicles, and claims. Once collected, Insurance companies could potentially use this data to find prospects, up-sell and cross-sell policies, detect claim fraud, and determine the risk of policyholders.
Currently, the utilization of this data in underwriting and actual business functioning is quite minimal. I have striven to analyze and optimize how data used within an insurance company could bring more value to customers, agents, and parent companies. However, almost all insurance companies have a wealth of data and only use it minimally in the decision-making process. In the future, I would like to apply my education by analyzing how this vast amount of data can be used to instigate the positive growth of companies.
I would be using some futuristic thinking and ideation for my dissertation work to draft some solutions to the data problems.
