Discussion of Serendipity, Error, and Exaptation

Serendipity is when there is progress in the actions caused by accident, and they create a happy accident that can be further used positively. The most exciting invention that was made through serendipity is the microwave oven. Percy Spencer was the founder who accidentally discovered that a candy bar present in his pocket was melting when he was working around a microwave-emitting magnetron, which led to the invention of the oven, which we are using currently to cook food. Error is the other way of discovering innovative ideas. The best example in this category would be penicillin, an antibiotic that has saved millions of lives over the decades. It was discovered by Alexander Fleming when he unknowingly left the dirty Petri dishes on which a kind of mold develop which was immune to the streptococcus. Exaptation is when the discovery is repurposed into something useful. The best example of this includes the AOL for Palm Pilot, email over mobile phones, Big Data, and data collection through various forms (Thinkandknowledgetank, 2019).

Serendipity: The name itself indicates that this could happen anywhere and at anytime. It could occur through a flyer or new insight, or a new perspective of the people with whom one gets interacted or the new ideas hidden inside our minds. The new perspective could lead to unexpected innovation. The main factor here is that one should be open to new ideas and opportunities and ignore the fear linked with the discovery.

Exaptation: This results from how the initial attribution of new functionality would exist in the new outcomes. This is also known as the word ‘Pre-Adaptation.’ Also, regarded as the most crucial evolutionary method in the history of ecosystems, technologies, and species. Darwin had proposed the pre-adaptation by explaining how the slow process like natural selection could turn into complex organs, contributing to the complete formation of an organism.

Error: The technological and historical records come with many examples of innovation. Most of the inventions are because of some mistake. The past business that made mistakes has proved to be quite brilliant, including ATMs, organic food, personal copiers, credit card for students, selling through pet stores, and so on (datafloq.com, 2020).
